Kumamoto's geography does a lot of the work at Daikanbo — the rest is knowing when to show up.

Daikanbo is a promontory on the northern rim of the Aso caldera at 936 metres, and from it the whole basin is visible at once: the five peaks of Aso in the middle, the Kuju range beyond, and eighteen kilometres of caldera floor with towns and rice fields on it. The five peaks together are said to look like a reclining Buddha seen from here, and once pointed out it is hard to unsee.

In autumn and early winter, on cold mornings after a clear night, cloud fills the basin below the rim and only the peaks stand out of it. That is what most people come for and it cannot be guaranteed. The viewpoint is a ten-minute walk from the car park, open at any hour and free, with a shop and restaurant that keep daytime hours.

Yamada, Aso, on the northern rim of the Aso caldera at 936 m. Car recommended, on the Milk Road along the caldera rim; from JR Aso Station. The viewpoint is about a short walk from the car park. Sea of cloud conditions occur on cold clear mornings, most often from autumn to early winter.

Local knowledge

**The cloud sea needs cold, clear and still.** Autumn to early winter, before dawn, after a clear night with a big temperature drop. It cannot be promised and half the mornings do not deliver. **Ten minutes on foot from the car park.** Uphill on a paved path. Sunrise means arriving in the dark and walking it with a torch. **Look for the reclining Buddha.** The five peaks of Aso read as a figure lying on its back from this angle. It is signposted and it works. **Open at any hour and free.** Which is why the car park has cars in it at four in the morning in November. **Drive the Milk Road.** The rim road either side of Daikanbo is one of the great drives in Japan and the viewpoint is the high point of it.
