A good onsen visit is mostly about timing, and Yamaga Onsen & Lantern Festival is no exception — when you go changes what you get.

Yamaga Onsen is a 1,800-year-old hot spring town in northern Kumamoto with alkaline waters (pH 9.5) that leave skin feeling silky. The town's preservation district contains Edo-period machiya townhouses, several converted into public bathhouses.

The Yamaga Toro Matsuri (August 15–16) is one of Kyushu's most beautiful festivals — 1,000 women wearing yukata and gold paper lanterns on their heads dance through the streets in synchronized formations, accompanied by traditional songs.

**Lantern-making workshop:** The Yamaga Lantern Museum offers 90-minute workshops (¥1,500) to make miniature gold lanterns using washi paper and bamboo — the same technique used for festival lanterns. The finished piece is 15cm tall and genuinely beautiful. Book 1 week ahead. **Festival viewing:** The main dance (千人灯籠踊り) begins at 20:00 on August 15 at the Yamaga Elementary School field. The 1,000-person formation under lantern light is extraordinary. Arrive by 19:00 for seating; standing room only after 19:30. **Sakura-yu architecture:** The bathhouse interior is designed like a Noh stage with high ceilings and decorative transoms. The reason: in the Edo period, the bathhouse doubled as a performance space during festivals. The architectural dual-purpose is visible in the room proportions.
