What sets Oshitoishi Hill apart from other natural sites in Kumamoto is how much depends on conditions outside anyone's control.

On a grassland hill at 845 metres on the outer rim of Aso stand several hundred stones, some of them very large, arranged in nine groups that do not look accidental. The biggest is a pyramid-shaped block 5.5 metres high and 15.3 around. One stone carries markings that a 1990s survey identified as petroglyphs and attributed to Sumerian-influenced seafarers, which is a claim well outside the archaeological mainstream and should be treated as such.

What is not disputed is that the stones are there, that some are aligned, that one pair works as a sundial, and that the view from the hill across the Aso caldera and the Kuju range is spectacular. It is privately managed, costs ¥200, and the grassland walk to the stones takes a few minutes from a ten-space car park.

Admission ¥200 for adults and ¥100 for elementary and junior high school students. Free parking for about 10 vehicles. Several hundred stones stand in nine arranged groups, the largest 5.5 m high and 15.3 m around. Inquiries to the Minamioguni tourism association. Confirm opening arrangements and seasonal access before travelling.

What to bring

**Treat the Sumerian claim with caution.** The petroglyph identification comes from a private survey and is not accepted archaeology. The stones and the alignments are real; the interpretation is contested. **Ten parking spaces.** On a grassland hill with no facilities. It fills quickly on fine weekends. **The view is the other half.** Aso caldera on one side, the Kuju range on the other, from 845 metres of open grass. Clear days make the trip. **Find the sundial pair.** Two stones set so that the shadow marks the time. Whatever the age, the arrangement is deliberate. **It is private land.** ¥200, managed locally, with an honesty-based system at quiet times. Respect the grazing and the fences.
