A visit to Mt. Aso Nakadake Crater is easy to underplan — bring more time, and less certainty about what you'll find, than you'd expect.

Mt. Aso is one of the world's largest active calderas (25km across) containing five volcanic peaks. Nakadake is the only peak with an accessible active crater — visitors can walk to the crater rim and look directly into the turquoise acidic lake 100 meters below, which constantly emits sulfurous gas. The crater's volcanic activity level determines access: when gas levels are safe, the viewing platform is open; during heightened activity, access closes.

The caldera itself was formed 90,000 years ago and now contains towns, farms, and forests — a rare example of humans living inside an active volcanic system.

What to know before you go

Access hours

Crater rim: 8:30 AM – 5:30 PM (access determined by volcanic activity level). Kusasenri Plateau 24/7.

Closed: Crater closes at volcanic alert level 2 or higher — check aso-geopark.jp before visiting

When to go

Year-round when alert level 1; spring and autumn for caldera grassland scenery; November for snow-dusted rim views

Fee

Crater toll road ¥1,000. Gas mask provided free. Kusasenri parking ¥500.

Getting there in detail

Aso Crater Ropeway or toll road to summit (Aso Crater Loop Line, ¥1,000 toll). From Aso Station: a bus. Crater viewing: 8:30–17:30 (weather dependent). Gas masks provided free at entrance.

Beyond the guidebook

**Real-time activity monitoring:** Check the Aso Volcano Museum's website (aso-geopark.jp) for current volcanic alert level before visiting. Level 1 = full access to crater rim, Level 2 = restricted access, Level 3+ = closed. The website updates hourly. **Kusasenri Plateau:** On the approach road, Kusasenri is a 1km-wide grass meadow inside the caldera with grazing horses and a small pond — the most photographed Aso landscape. Free access, parking ¥500. Walk the full circumference for changing mountain views. **Aso Shrine recovery:** The 2016 earthquake destroyed the historic Aso Shrine tower gate (romon). Reconstruction was completed in 2023 — the new cypress gate uses traditional joinery techniques. Free entry, from Aso Station.
