Castles, museums, and historical districts

This is the broadest category on the site, covering castles, samurai residences, preserved merchant townscapes, museums dedicated to a specific historical period or craft, and sites tied to particular events or figures — anything where the draw is understanding a place's past rather than its scenery or its food. Japan's feudal period, roughly 1185 to 1868, supplies most of the built heritage: castle towns, samurai districts and the checkpoints and post towns that once lined highways like the Nakasendo and Tokaido.

Most original castles were lost to fire, war or Meiji-era demolition, so many castles on this site are 20th-century concrete reconstructions rather than original wooden structures — worth knowing before expecting centuries-old timber, though a handful of originals, including Himeji, Matsumoto, Hikone and Inuyama, do survive and are treated as the country's most significant. Samurai districts and merchant townscapes, by contrast, are more often genuinely old streetscapes, sometimes with buildings still in family hands generations later.

Admission to castles, museums and historic house interiors is nearly always ticketed, unlike temple and shrine grounds; expect modest fees and, at smaller regional museums, limited or no English signage. Historical density varies by region: former castle towns and post towns are thickest through Nagano, Gifu, Hyogo and Shimane; samurai heritage concentrates in Kanazawa, Kagoshima and parts of Tohoku; and Hiroshima and Nagasaki carry the country's most visited modern-history sites.

Before you go

This is the category with a ticket window. Unlike temple grounds, castles, museums, samurai houses and preserved merchant residences are almost all paid, generally a few hundred yen for a single house and up to around a thousand for a major castle keep, in cash at a booth. Allow forty minutes for one building, half a day for a castle with its grounds, and a full afternoon for a preserved district you actually walk rather than photograph from one end.

The single most useful thing to know before you go: most Japanese castles are not old. Fire, the deliberate demolitions of the 1870s and the bombing of the 1940s took the great majority, and what stands on many castle hills is a mid-twentieth-century concrete reconstruction with a lift and a museum inside. A dozen keeps survive in original timber, and the difference in the experience is total — steep ladder-like stairs, no heating, shoes in a bag under your arm. Neither is a waste of time, but knowing which one you are buying a ticket for prevents the most common disappointment in this category.

Preserved streetscapes work the other way round. A merchant quarter or post town is usually genuinely old, and often still lived in — which means the correct behaviour is that of someone walking down a residential street, not around a museum. Doors that are open are shops; doors that are shut are homes.

English signage is good at national museums and major castles and thin to absent at small municipal ones, where the interesting local history usually is. A translated pamphlet at the desk is common; ask for it rather than assuming there is none.

Choosing your first one

Decide first whether you want a building or a street, because they are different days and people who conflate them come away underwhelmed.

If you want a building, choose an original over a reconstruction for a first visit. The surviving keeps are physically strange in a way no rebuild conveys — dark, cold, vertical, and full of the arrangements of a fortification rather than the display cases of a museum. If the nearest option is a reconstruction, that is fine, but go for the view from the top and the grounds rather than expecting the interior to be the point.

If you want a street, pick one that is still inhabited over one that has been fully turned over to souvenir shops. The tell is whether there are ordinary businesses — a barber, a hardware shop, a post office — among the cafés. A preserved district with real residents keeps its proportions and its quiet; one with none is an outdoor gift shop with good architecture.

Two practical criteria on top. Prefer somewhere you can walk from the station, because these places were laid out before cars and are much better read on foot than approached across a car park. And prefer a site with a small local museum attached, even a dull-looking one: the object that explains why this particular town mattered is nearly always in there, and it is the difference between looking at old buildings and understanding what you are looking at.

Save the two great modern-history sites, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, for a day with nothing else in it.

Common mistakes

Expecting every castle to be old. Covered above, and worth repeating because it is the number one source of "that was disappointing" in this category. Check before you go; a reconstruction visited knowingly is a good afternoon.

Wearing shoes that are hard to get off. Original keeps, samurai houses and merchant residences are all shoes-off, repeatedly, sometimes four times in an afternoon. Laced boots make this miserable.

Turning up on Monday. The default closing day for museums and many historic house interiors nationwide. The grounds may be open and the building shut, which is the worst of both.

Photographing inside private preserved houses without checking. Exteriors are fine everywhere. Interiors of houses that are still family property frequently are not, and the sign is often only in Japanese.

Doing a preserved district at midday in summer. These streets are narrow, unshaded and made of dark wood and stone; early morning is both cooler and empty, and the light is better for exactly the photograph everyone comes for.

Assuming the castle ticket includes the grounds, or vice versa. Many sites charge separately for the park, the keep and a garden, and the combination ticket is only worth it if you actually intend to do all three.

Skipping the small municipal museum. It is usually a few hundred yen, usually nearly empty, and usually the only place in the town that explains why the town is there.

Within half an hour of a hub and short enough to do without rearranging the day: castle parks, single houses, small museums and streets you can reach on foot from a train. This is the most useful bundle for anyone travelling by rail, because it turns a two-hour gap between trains into something worth having. Most are a few hundred yen and forty minutes. Check the closing day before you count on one — Monday takes out a surprising number — and remember that the grounds and the building are often ticketed separately, so an out-of-hours visit is not necessarily a wasted one.
