Kikuchi Valley looks different depending on the season, the weather, and the time of day — none of which a single photo can tell you.

Kikuchi Valley is a 4km walking trail following the Kikuchi River through a gorge of broadleaf forest, designated as one of Japan's 'Forest Therapy Bases' by the Forestry Agency. The trail passes waterfalls, clear river pools, and sections where the canopy creates 90% shade cover — producing measured health benefits (reduced cortisol, lowered blood pressure) that define forest bathing as medical practice rather than tourism.

The valley's negative ion concentration (air particles produced by moving water and photosynthesis) is among the highest measured in Kyushu.

Getting there in detail

Kikuchi Valley, Kikuchi City. A drive from Kumamoto City or from Aso. Free parking at valley entrance. Trail: 4km one-way (2 hours), well-maintained gravel path.

What to bring

**Pools for swimming:** Three natural pools along the trail are swimmable July–September. The water is spring-fed and maintains 16–18°C even in August — cold but refreshing in humid summer. The second pool (1.5km from trailhead) is the deepest (2.5m) and has a rope swing installed by locals. **Autumn color:** Late November, the valley's momiji (Japanese maple) turns uniformly red due to the sheltered microclimate. The combination of red leaves, green moss, and turquoise water creates exceptional photographic conditions. Weekday visits avoid the significant weekend crowds. **Certified forest therapy walk:** The Kikuchi Tourism Association offers guided 3-hour forest therapy walks (¥3,000, English available by advance booking) that include breathing exercises, sensory awareness activities, and tea ceremony in the forest. The program is medically supervised and designed for stress reduction.
