The surrounding cedars are 300-500 years old; the grove has primeval forest atmosphere rare in Japan. Budget 90 minutes for the ascent (older visitors take 2+ hours), 60 minutes down. There's a paid bus to the summit (¥500) but walking is essential for pilgrimage merit. **Shukubo temple lodging:** Staying overnight in a Mt. Haguro shukubo is the authentic Dewa Sanzan experience. Meals are elaborate shojin-ryori featuring mountain vegetables, tofu, tempura, and seasonal ingredients — no meat or fish.
