Yamadera (Risshakuji Temple) — 1,000 Steps to Enlightenment

**Best seasons, different reasons:** October hits differently—maple leaves burning red against gray rock, morning fog trapped in the valley until 10am, and cool enough (12-15°C) that you won't overheat on the climb. June brings the cicadas Basho heard, so loud in the cedars you can barely think. January sees maybe 20 people all day; the steps become ice-slick and the pines bow under snow, but if you've got microspikes it's yours alone. Skip May and October weekends when tour buses disgorge 500+ visitors who clog the narrow trail. Get there at 8am opening, especially in autumn. **The photo everyone wants:** Stand at Godaido hall (the final pavilion clinging to the cliff) and shoot back toward Niomon Gate with the valley dropping 300 meters below—if you're lucky, morning fog fills that gap and the gate floats. Telephoto (100-200mm) compresses it nicely. The other angle: walk 10 minutes east from Yamadera Station into the rice paddies and shoot up at Godaido's red roof against the cliff. Farmers don't mind if you stay on the paths. **Go past Godaido:** Most people stop at Godaido thinking they're done, but Okunoin lies 15 more minutes uphill—darker, quieter, with Ennin's actual remains in Kaizando Hall. Maybe 1 in 10 visitors bothers. Also, study the Nio guardian kings at Niomon Gate on your way up; they're 1848 carvings, faces twisted in fury, muscles bulging under wooden robes. Better sculpture than you'll find in most museums. **Take the west path down:** Don't retrace your steps. The west descent passes Sesshoseki (a sulfurous rock that killed birds, now inert) and Yama-no-Otera, a cave where monks used to sit in darkness for weeks. Adds 20 minutes but shows you the temple's depth. The main trail is just the tourist track. **Tamakonnyaku at the bottom:** Your legs will be rubber. Buy tamakonnyaku from the vendors at the entrance—3 konjac balls on a skewer, grilled and salty, ¥200. Yamagata's been eating these for 200 years. Wash it down with hot amazake if it's cold out.
