A visit to Uradome Coast is easy to underplan — bring more time, and less certainty about what you'll find, than you'd expect.

The Uradome Coast stretches 15 kilometers of jagged volcanic cliffs, sea caves, and white-sand coves along the San'in Kaigan UNESCO Geopark. The coastline was carved by ancient volcanic eruptions and millennia of wave erosion, creating a labyrinth of rock arches, hidden beaches, and crystalline tide pools. The water glows emerald and turquoise — a result of white sand reflecting through shallow depth — and visibility reaches 20 meters on calm days.

Sea kayaking is the definitive way to experience Uradome. Guided tours paddle through narrow rock channels inaccessible by foot, explore caves where swallows nest in volcanic basalt, and beach on secluded coves for swimming and snorkeling. The coast faces northeast, sheltered from prevailing winds, making it kayak-friendly even for beginners. The combination of dramatic geology and Caribbean-like water color creates one of Japan's most visually stunning coastal experiences.

Getting there in detail

Uradome Coast: by bus from Tottori Station to Iwami-cho (¥1,050). Sea kayaking tours: ¥6,000–8,000 for 3-hour guided tour, equipment included. Season: April–October. No experience required. Glass-bottom boat tours also available (¥1,500, 40 minutes).

**Kayaking tour selection:** Their 3-hour morning tour (9:00–12:00, ¥7,000) includes cave exploration, cliff-base paddling, and a private beach stop for swimming and snorkeling. The afternoon tour (13:00–16:00) encounters rougher sea conditions — beginners should take the morning slot. Maximum 8 participants per guide ensures personalized attention. **Cave exploration:** The highlight is Ajiro Cave (網代の洞窟), a 50-meter sea cave that penetrates completely through the cliff headland. Kayaking through in near-darkness while waves echo off basalt walls creates a genuinely thrilling moment. The cave is accessible only 2 hours before/after high tide — tour timing coordinates with tidal schedules. **Snorkeling conditions:** Bring your own mask and snorkel (rental available but basic). The coves host rocky reef fish — black rockfish, sea bream, schools of juvenile sardines — plus occasional encounters with jellyfish (harmless moon jellies). Water temperature: 18–24°C May–September. Visibility best in June–July before summer plankton blooms. **Photography from water:** Most phones are not waterproof enough for kayaking splashes. Bring a simple waterproof camera or GoPro. The most photogenic moment: paddling beneath the Sengan Matsushima rock arch with the cliff face towering 40 meters overhead, backlit by morning sun. **Combine with coastal trail:** The Uradome Coast Trail runs 6 km from Iwami Station to Cape Ajiro with clifftop viewpoints overlooking the kayaking route. Hike in the morning (2 hours), kayak in the afternoon for two perspectives on the same landscape.
