Sakitsu Village has outlasted the version of Kumamoto it was originally built for, and it shows.

Sakitsu is a fishing village on a narrow inlet in southern Amakusa, and for over two hundred years of prohibition its people practised Christianity in secret while outwardly living as Buddhists and Shinto parishioners. They prayed to shells, to medals hidden in the house, to a scallop whose ridged pattern they read as an image of the Virgin. It is now part of the UNESCO listing for the Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki Region.

The church, finished in 1934 by Yosuke Tetsukawa, stands on the site of the village headman's house where suspected Christians had been made to trample on holy images. Its floor is tatami, which almost no church in Japan has. Above it on the hill stands Sakitsu Suwa Shrine, and the two are visible together — the arrangement the village lived inside for two centuries.

Kawaura-cho Sakitsu, Amakusa. Car or taxi strongly recommended; public transport to southern Amakusa is slow and infrequent. The village and Sakitsu Suwa Shrine are free. Sakitsu Church is open to visitors but is an active place of worship — advance notification is requested and there are restrictions during services and at certain times; confirm with the Amakusa tourism information before travelling. The Sakitsu Shiryokan Minatoya interpretive centre stands in the village. The church interior is tatami-floored and photography inside is not permitted.

Historical notes & tips

**Notify before visiting the church.** It is a working parish church, not a monument, and visits are managed. The village asks visitors to give notice and to respect service times. **The floor is tatami.** Almost unique in Japan. It is why the interior feels like a house and why shoes come off. **Look at the shrine above the church.** Sakitsu Suwa Shrine on the hill was where hidden Christians registered as parishioners. Seeing both in one view is the whole story of the place. **They prayed to shells.** The ridged pattern of a scallop was read as the Virgin. The interpretive centre in the village shows the objects, which is where this becomes concrete rather than abstract. **Combine with Oe.** The other Amakusa church is about twenty minutes away and the two are always visited together.
