A visit to Oe Church starts before the gate — how you approach it is part of what the site is asking of you.

Oe Church stands white on a hilltop above the fields of western Amakusa, visible for a long way, and it was built in 1933 by the villagers themselves with the French priest Frederic Garnier, who had come to Amakusa in 1892 and stayed for the rest of his life. He put his own money into it and the parish did the rest.

The architect was Yosuke Tetsukawa, the carpenter's son from Nagasaki who built around fifty churches across Kyushu without formal training and is called the father of church architecture in Japan. Oe is Romanesque outside and ribbed-vaulted inside, on a hill in a farming village at the western edge of the country. It is part of the same hidden Christian story as Sakitsu, twenty minutes away.

Amakusa-machi Oe 1782, Amakusa, on a hill above the village. Car or taxi recommended. It is an active church — visitors are asked to observe service times and dress and behave appropriately, and photography inside is not permitted. Free to visit. The Rosary Hall interpretive facility stands nearby. By car from Sakitsu.

What locals know

**Garnier stayed for life.** He arrived in 1892 and died here in 1941, and the village built the church with him. His grave is in the grounds. **Tetsukawa built about fifty churches.** A carpenter's son with no formal training who worked out Western vaulting from books and became the defining church architect of Kyushu. Oe is one of his best. **No photography inside.** As at Sakitsu. It is a parish church and the rule is enforced. **Twenty minutes from Sakitsu.** The two are always done together and the road between them runs along the west coast, which is worth the drive on its own. **It is on a hill above farmland.** Approaching from below, with the white church against the sky, is the view that makes the trip.
