Izumi Fumoto Samurai District has outlasted the version of Kagoshima it was originally built for, and it shows.

Satsuma did not concentrate its samurai in one castle town. It scattered them across more than a hundred fortified administrative settlements called fumoto, each with its own garrison, which is why Kagoshima has a density of samurai districts found nowhere else in Japan. Izumi was the largest of them, sited on the border with Higo because that was the direction an attack would come from.

About forty-four hectares of it survive, designated an Important Preservation District: stone walls, hedges of tea and podocarpus, gates, and the wide streets a mounted garrison needed. Three buildings are open — the Takezoe residence, the Saisho residence and a history museum — on one combined ticket. The scale is what distinguishes it; you walk for twenty minutes and are still inside the district.

Fumoto-cho, Izumi. By car or taxi from Izumi Station on the Kyushu Shinkansen. Free to walk the streets. A combined ticket covering the Izumi Fumoto History Museum, the Takezoe residence and the Saisho residence costs ¥510 for high school age and above and ¥300 for elementary and junior high school students, with group rates for 20 or more.

Historical notes & tips

**The combined ticket is the efficient buy.** ¥510 covers the museum and both open residences. Buying separately makes no sense. **Look at the hedges and the walls.** Stone bases with clipped tea and podocarpus above them are the signature of a Satsuma fumoto and they are what tells you this is a garrison rather than a merchant town. **It is large.** Forty-four hectares, which is a considerable walk. Allow ninety minutes if you want to see beyond the three open buildings. **Combine with the cranes.** The crane observation centre is fifteen minutes away and open November to March. Cranes at dawn and the samurai district afterwards is the standard Izumi day. **There are other fumoto.** Iriki, Chiran and Kaseda are also preserved, and the four together form a Japan Heritage route across the prefecture.
