Kyoto's geography does a lot of the work at Sagano Scenic Railway — the rest is knowing when to show up.

The Sagano Scenic Railway (嵯峨野観光鉄道, Torokko Train) runs 7.3km along the Hozugawa River gorge between Arashiyama and Kameoka, offering views of forested mountains, river rapids, and seasonal colors inaccessible by road. The vintage-style open-air train cars allow unobstructed views and breeze — particularly dramatic in autumn when maple leaves create a red tunnel.

The railway follows an abandoned JR line converted to sightseeing use in 1991. The 25-minute journey passes through tunnels and over bridges while narration (Japanese) explains the gorge's history and upcoming views.

Its own posted hours are 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. That gives you exactly two windows you can plan from published information rather than from luck: be at the entrance for 9:00 AM, or come late enough that 5:00 PM is your deadline. Beyond the guidebook

**Car selection:** Car 5 (The Rich) is the only open-air car with no windows — fresh air, unobstructed photos, and full immersion in gorge scenery. Cars 1–4 have windows that open but less dramatic. Car 5 books out first; reserve online 1 month ahead for autumn foliage season (November). In rain, Car 5 is miserable (no roof) — avoid unless weather is clear. **Combination with Hozugawa River Cruise:** The ideal combo: Torokko train from Saga → Kameoka, then Hozugawa River boat cruise from Kameoka back to Arashiyama (90 min, ¥4,100). The boat journey covers the same gorge from water level with different perspective — boatmen navigate rapids using bamboo poles in traditional method. Total experience: 3 hours including connections. **Autumn foliage timing:** Peak gorge colors occur mid-November (varies ±1 week annually). The Torokko train is Kyoto's best autumn foliage venue because the gorge is inaccessible by foot, making train views exclusive. Book tickets by early October for mid-November travel. Spring (April) offers cherry blossoms but less dramatic than autumn.
