A visit to Kiyomizu-dera starts before the gate — how you approach it is part of what the site is asking of you.

Kiyomizu-dera (清水寺, 'Pure Water Temple') is a UNESCO World Heritage temple famous for its wooden stage (清水の舞台, Kiyomizu no Butai) that juts 13 meters over the hillside, constructed entirely without nails using traditional joinery. The stage offers panoramic views over Kyoto's eastern mountains and, in spring and autumn, the surrounding cherry blossoms and maple trees.

The temple dates to 778 AD, predating Kyoto's founding as Japan's capital. The Otowa Waterfall at the temple's base is considered sacred — visitors drink from three streams believed to grant longevity, academic success, or romantic fortune (choose only one, or risk greed).

The approach to Kiyomizu-dera is a shopping street, the stage is the picture you have already seen, and the temple's own site is the authority on its hours and its ticketing. Repeating any of that at length would add a thousand words and nothing else.

Higashiyama Ward. Near Gojo-zaka bus stop or Kiyomizu-Gojo Station. Entry: ¥400. Visit duration: 45-60 minutes. Uphill approach on Kiyomizu-zaka (steep).

How to Get There

Bus: From Kyoto Station, take City Bus 100 or 206 to Gojo-zaka or Kiyomizu-michi stop (15 min, ¥230), then 10-15 min uphill walk through Kiyomizu-zaka shopping street. Train + Walk: Take Keihan Line to Kiyomizu-Gojo Station, then 20 min uphill walk. Taxi: 15 min from Kyoto Station (¥2,000-2,500) to base of approach.

Best Time to Visit

Opening time (6:00 AM in summer, 6:30 AM in winter) for solitude before tour buses at 8:00 AM. Late afternoon (4:00-6:00 PM) as crowds thin. Night illumination periods offer different experience but crowded.

Crowd Avoidance Tips

5 million annual visitors. Avoid 10:00 AM-3:00 PM when tour groups peak. Cherry blossom season (early April) and autumn foliage (November) see extreme crowds - arrive at opening. Weekday mornings 50% less crowded than weekends. Uphill approach (Kiyomizu-zaka) gets congested midday.

Parking Information

Very limited parking near temple. Kyoto City public parking: ¥800-1,000/day (small capacity, fills early). Buses recommended due to steep narrow approach roads unsuitable for parking.

**Illumination seasons:** Kiyomizu-dera offers night illumination (18:00–21:30, last entry 21:00) during cherry blossom season (late March–early April), summer (August), and autumn foliage (November–December). Night entry is separate admission (¥400) with different ticket gate. The illuminated stage against dark forest creates dramatic atmosphere — worth a second visit if timing aligns. **Crowd strategy:** The temple receives 5 million annual visitors. For minimal crowds, arrive at 6:00 opening (summer) or 6:30 (winter). The first 30 minutes offer solitude before tour buses arrive at 8:00. Afternoon (16:00–closing) is second-best option as crowds thin. Weekday mornings are significantly quieter than weekends. **Otowa Waterfall ritual:** Three streams flow from the waterfall — left (longevity), center (academic success), right (romantic fortune). Traditional etiquette: use the provided long-handled cups, drink from one stream only (greed to drink from all brings misfortune), and don't drink directly from the stream (use the cup). The water is safe to drink (from mountain springs).
