Philosopher's Path — Cherry Blossom Canal Walk

**Cherry blossom timing:** The path's 300+ Somei Yoshino cherry trees bloom early April (peak dates vary ±1 week annually). Kyoto Tourism Association publishes bloom forecasts in March. Peak bloom lasts 5–7 days, followed by 3–5 days of petal fall (花筏, hanaikada) when the canal becomes a floating pink carpet — equally beautiful. Visit early morning (6:00–8:00) during bloom season for solitude; afternoon crowds can make the narrow path frustratingly slow. **Full walk strategy:** Walking south-to-north (Nanzen-ji to Ginkaku-ji) is uphill but places the sun behind you for better photography. Most tourists start at Ginkaku-ji and walk downhill, creating afternoon northbound congestion. Midweek mornings see 1/10th the crowds of weekend afternoons. The central section (near Eikan-do) is most densely planted and photogenic. **Off-season appeal:** Cherry season is glorious but crowded.
