Not every sacred site in Nagasaki draws a crowd. Oura Catholic Church is one of the ones that doesn't need to.

Built in 1864 by French missionary Father Petitjean, Oura Church is the oldest surviving Christian church in Japan and a UNESCO World Heritage Site honoring the 26 Martyrs of Japan executed in 1597. The Gothic Revival structure with its cream-colored walls and triple-arched entrance stands on a hillside overlooking Nagasaki Harbor — positioned deliberately to face Nishizaka Hill where the martyrs died.

The church gained historical significance in 1865 when a group of 'hidden Christians' (Kakure Kirishitan) — descendants of believers who had practiced in secret for 250 years during the prohibition — revealed themselves to Father Petitjean, creating what Vatican historians call the 'miracle of the Orient.' The interior contains French-made stained glass windows depicting the 26 martyrs and the discovery of the hidden Christians.

Visiting etiquette & tips

**Hidden Christian Museum:** The adjacent museum contains artifacts from the 250-year underground period — hand-carved crosses disguised as Buddhist implements, secret baptismal records, and Maria Kannon statues (Buddhist Kannon figures secretly venerated as Virgin Mary). This collection is the most comprehensive documentation of Kakure Kirishitan faith practice in Japan. **Mass attendance:** Catholic mass is held Sundays at 7:00 (Japanese) and 9:30 (multilingual). Non-Catholics may attend respectfully — the service in the original French-designed sanctuary, with light through 19th-century stained glass, is a genuine historical continuity. **Stained glass timing:** The western-facing windows (martyrdom scenes) receive direct afternoon sunlight 14:00–16:30, illuminating the glass at maximum intensity. This is the optimal photography window.
