What Ogi-Juku Post Town looked like originally and what it looks like now are two different stories — both worth knowing before you arrive.

Ogi was a major rest stop on the Nagasaki Kaido highway — the road connecting Nagasaki to Edo used by Dutch traders making their annual journey to pay tribute to the Shogun. The samurai district (buke-yashiki) is partially intact with stone walls and gated compound entrances; the merchant district (machiya-dori) contains six consecutive merchant houses from the 1800s, several still operating as shops or cafés.

Historical notes & tips

**The Dutch connection:** The Nagasaki Kaido route is marked by stone marker pillars — Ogi has three of the original markers still standing, including one noting the distance to Nagasaki and one to Edo. These are in a garden behind the town hall, unmarked on tourist maps. **Machiya café experience:** Two former merchant houses serve lunch (11:30–14:00, reservation recommended) in their original reception rooms — tatami floor, low lacquer table, the original Meiji-period ceiling beams visible overhead. The fixed lunch (¥1,200) features local produce.
