Karatsu Castle is easy to reduce to a photo stop, but the history behind it is what makes the stop worth making.

Karatsu Castle (1608) stands on a pine-covered promontory directly above the mouth of the Matsuura River, with three sides facing the sea — one of Japan's few castle sites where the ocean dominates the view from every window. The reconstructed donjon (1966) contains a well-curated collection of artifacts from the Karatsu Kunchi festival, including the 14 festival floats (hikiyama) that parade through town annually in early November. The floats — representing mythological creatures and Chinese scenes — are works of lacquer craft that have been maintained and repainted for 200 years.

**Karatsu Kunchi Festival (November 2–4):** The festival floats parade through the city streets while hundreds of men pull them with ropes. The scale is extraordinary — the largest float (red lion) is 7 meters tall and weighs 2 tons. The night procession (November 2, 20:00) is the most atmospheric event. **Castle grounds at sunset:** The stone walls on the sea-facing side catch the last light of the day and turn golden — the best view is from the third story window facing northwest, where Karatsu Bay and the distant Genkai islands are visible together with the castle wall foreground.
