Saga Riverine Plain — Winter Crane Flyover

The Saga Plain, particularly the rice paddy areas south and west of Saga City, hosts one of the largest concentrations of wintering cranes in Japan outside Kagoshima — specifically, the rare Hooded Crane (manaZuru) and the common Crane (ma-zuru) that winter here from October to March after migrating from Siberia. At dawn, flocks of 200–500 birds fly from their overnight river roosts to the harvested paddy fields, creating formations visible for 5km.

Insider Guide

Premium
**Dawn flyover schedule:** Cranes leave roosts at precisely 30 minutes after local sunrise. Arriving at the paddy fields 45 minutes before sunrise and positioning near the flight corridor between the Kase River roost and the main paddy feeding areas gives the best overhead passages. **Crane identification:** Hooded Cranes (smaller, with gray hood and white patch) are considered rarer than the Common Cranes that dominate the flyovers — the mixed flocks are distinguished by size. A dedicated birding guide from Saga City Tourism (seasonal, English available, ¥3,000/half day) can identify species and predict behavior.
