Honmyo-ji Temple — Samurai Cemetery on the Hill

**Hosokawa graves:** The clan cemetery (墓所) is behind the main hall through a separate gate. Each generation's lord has a stone memorial with family crest. The cemetery's arrangement by chronological order tells the clan's 240-year story in spatial form — moving from entry to back = 1632 to 1871. Ask the temple office for the cemetery map (Japanese only, but names and dates are visible). **Five-story pagoda:** The wooden pagoda (built 1867) is Kumamoto's only five-story pagoda and a designated Important Cultural Property. The interior is not open, but the exterior carpentry joints are visible — traditional methods without nails. Morning light (8:00–10:00) illuminates the pagoda through the surrounding cedars. **Quiet alternative to castle:** Honmyo-ji receives 5% of Kumamoto Castle's visitor volume but represents equivalent historical importance. The temple's connection to the Hosokawa clan makes it essential for understanding Kumamoto's Edo-period governance.
