You don't need to speak the language to order well at Iki Island — you need to know when to go and what to expect.

Iki Island (138 km²) in the Genkai Sea produces 50% of Japan's barley shochu (mugi-jochu) — the island's volcanic soil and sea breeze create optimal conditions for barley cultivation and fermentation. Seven distilleries operate on the island, each producing distinct styles from sweet to dry. The shochu culture is woven into daily life — the traditional iki-jochu drinking vessel (short glass, diluted with water) appears at every meal.

Archaeologically, Iki contains 280 kofun (ancient burial mounds) from the 3rd–7th centuries, indicating the island's strategic importance in ancient Japan-Korea maritime trade. The largest (Sotoura Kofun) is 45 meters in diameter and accessible to walk on.

Ferry from Karatsu (1 hr) or Hakata (2 hrs). Or 30-min flight from Nagasaki. Bicycle rental (¥1,000/day) recommended. Distillery tours: advance booking required, most offer English tours. Free.

Beyond the guidebook

**Distillery visit strategy:** Iki no Kura Distillery (oldest, traditional pot-still) and Yokoyama Distillery (modern column-still, fruity profile) represent opposite ends of the style spectrum. Visiting both in one afternoon (they're 15 minutes apart) provides complete shochu education. Free tastings at both; ¥2,000 bottles for takeaway. **Harunotsuji archaeological site:** Japan's largest Yayoi period (300 BC–300 AD) settlement site, covering 100 hectares. The excavation remains partially visible, and a museum displays artifacts documenting Iki's role as a trade hub between Japan and Korea. Entry ¥400. **Sea urchin season:** June–August, Iki's murasaki uni (purple sea urchin) is at peak season. The fishing port morning market (Ashibe Port, 6:00–10:00 daily) sells live uni for ¥1,000–1,500 per tray — the sweetest sea urchin available in Japan, period.
