Hasami Porcelain has outlasted the version of Nagasaki it was originally built for, and it shows.

Hasami Town, adjacent to Arita but in Nagasaki Prefecture, has produced porcelain for 400 years using the same clay sources as Arita. Hasami-yaki was historically the 'common ware' — daily-use bowls and plates for merchants and farmers rather than aristocratic gift pieces. This utilitarian origin has given modern Hasami a design advantage: the kilns embraced modernist aesthetics in the 1960s-70s, producing the clean minimalist porcelain that defines contemporary Japanese tableware.

The town has 180+ kilns and showrooms concentrated along a 5km valley. The Hasami Ceramics Park and adjacent showrooms offer the widest selection — from ¥500 rice bowls to ¥50,000 limited-edition series. The price-to-quality ratio is exceptional compared to Tokyo department stores.

**What to buy:** The 'Common' series (blocks of solid color in matte glaze, stackable design) is Hasami's signature product — designed in 2012, now sold globally. The Hasami-made versions (available only in Hasami) are 30-40% cheaper than export prices. A full 4-person dining set costs ¥8,000–12,000. **Kiln studio visits:** Several production kilns allow walk-in visits to see throwing and glazing processes. The largest (Nishinihon Toki) has English-speaking staff and a 'seconds shop' selling flawed pieces at 60% discount — the flaws are often invisible. **Annual ceramics festival:** The Hasami Pottery Festival (Golden Week, April 29-May 5) fills the town with 200+ temporary stalls selling direct from kilns. Prices drop 20-40% below normal showroom levels. Arrive early (before 9:00) for best selection.
