Fukui has plenty of scenery; Echizen Ono Castle is the kind that's worth planning a whole day around.

Ono sits in a mountain basin, and on cold still mornings from autumn into spring the basin fills with cloud while the castle on its hill above stays clear. Seen from the ridge opposite, the keep appears to float on a white sea. Ono calls itself the sky castle for this reason and it happens perhaps ten or fifteen mornings a year.

The town below it survives as a Sengoku-era grid — Ono is called the little Kyoto of Hokuriku — with a daily morning market that has run for four centuries and abundant spring water rising all over the town. The float is the famous part; the town is why you would stay past breakfast.

Ono. About a short walk from JR Echizen-Ono Station to the trailhead, then about 20 minutes up to the keep; roughly by car from Ono IC on the Chubu Jukan Expressway. Keep admission ¥400 for adults, free for junior high school age and under, ¥200 for groups of 30 or more and for visitors with a disability certificate. The sea of cloud is best seen from Inuyama, about 1 km west of the castle, and occurs from late autumn to spring.

Beyond the guidebook

**You watch the cloud from the other hill, not from the castle.** The viewpoint is at Inuyama, about a kilometre west, and it means a pre-dawn climb in the dark to be in position for sunrise. **The conditions are specific and rare.** Cold, still, high humidity, and a large temperature drop overnight — typically late autumn to early spring, and only some mornings. The city publishes a likelihood forecast in season. **The keep is a 1968 reconstruction.** Go for the view over the basin and the town grid rather than for the architecture. **Do the morning market.** The Nanamachi market runs daily from the spring equinox to New Year's Eve, 7:00 to about 11:00, with produce laid out on the ground — a format that has almost vanished elsewhere. **Drink the water.** Ono sits on abundant groundwater with public springs around the town; Oshozu is the best known and free.
