A good onsen visit is mostly about timing, and Takeo Onsen Motoyu is no exception — when you go changes what you get.

Motoyu, the central public bath of Takeo Onsen, occupies a building constructed in 1915 in the style of a Noh stage — a red-lacquered wooden gate (built in 1788, registered as an Important Cultural Property) frames the approach. The bath itself has an unbroken operating history from at least the 8th century; the alkaline waters were reportedly enjoyed by Toyotomi Hideyoshi during his Korean campaigns. The interior contains a rotenburo (outdoor bath) of unusual design: the water emerges directly from the ground into a granite basin.

**The locked second floor:** Motoyu has a private 'daimyo bath' on the upper floor, available for reservation (¥2,500/person, advance booking required). Used historically by feudal lords, it contains original Edo-period fittings and a single bath for private soaking with 15th-century tiles. **The gate at night:** The 1788 gate is illuminated from 18:00–23:00 and is among the most atmospheric small architectural spots in Kyushu — particularly beautiful in rain when the red lacquer reflects in the wet stone approach.
