Mifuneyama Rakuen — Garden in a Cliff Face

Mifuneyama Rakuen, a 500,000-square-meter garden carved into the forested slopes of Mt. Mifuneyama (sheer granite cliffs rising 210m from the garden floor), was constructed over 3 years beginning in 1845 by the 28th lord of Takeo Han. The garden contains 200,000 azalea bushes that cover entire hillsides in crimson and pink in late April; in autumn, 4,000 maple trees produce an equivalent effect in orange and red. The illumination events (spring and autumn) turn the garden into a light art installation after dark.

**Azalea peak (late April):** The hillside turns entirely red when the satsuki azaleas bloom simultaneously — a density of color that looks digitally enhanced. Target April 25–May 5 for the overlap of azalea peak and Golden Week (crowds present but manageable before 9:00). **TeamLab illumination:** Since 2018, the garden has hosted the teamLab 'Digitized Nature' project — digital art projections onto the rock faces and water surfaces (September–November, 18:00–22:00). The 500m cliff face serves as a projection screen for generative digital imagery. Reserve online well in advance; tickets sell out 3 weeks before.
