Saga Onsen Hizen Yumo rewards visitors who treat the bath as the destination, not a stop on the way to one.

Located 20km south of Saga City in the Sefurisan mountain range, Hizen Yumo Onsen is a concentrated cluster of three ryokan using the same source — a sodium chloride hot spring at 48°C that has been used since the 12th century. The spring water is amber-colored from the mineral content, and the outdoor baths overlook the Kase River valley from an elevation of 400m. In autumn (mid-November), the surrounding forest creates one of the finest foliage framing views of any onsen in Saga Prefecture.

What locals know

**Best ryokan:** The three ryokan are priced similarly (¥15,000–22,000/night with dinner). Request the tatami room in the main hall building (not the annex) for the original Meiji-era timber framing. Dinner includes Saga beef as the main course at all three establishments. **Mountain hiking connection:** The Sefurisan (1077m) trail begins 500m from the onsen cluster — a 3-hour round trip through beech forest to a summit view over the entire Saga Plain. Combining morning hike with afternoon onsen is the ideal single-day circuit.
