A visit to Samegai Baikamo is easy to underplan — bring more time, and less certainty about what you'll find, than you'd expect.

Samegai was the sixty-first station on the Nakasendo, and the Jizo river runs straight down the middle of it, fed by a spring that holds about 14 degrees all year. In that constant cold water grows baikamo, a submerged buttercup that flowers underwater — small white five-petalled blooms on green fronds that stream flat in the current, visible from the road only if you look down into the water rather than at it.

The flowering runs from around May and peaks from early July to mid-September. The same water supports hariyo, a threatened freshwater stickleback that needs cold clean springs and survives in very few places. Houses along the river still have stone steps down to it, and the whole village is about ten minutes end to end.

Samegai, Maibara City, along the Jizo river through the old Nakasendo post town. About a short walk from Samegai Station on the JR Tokaido Line. Free and open at all hours. The baikamo flowers from around May, peaking from early July to mid-September. An evening illumination of the river runs for several weeks in August — dates are set each year by the city. Parking near the roadside station on Route 21.

Local knowledge

**Look into the water, not at the village.** The flowers sit at or just below the surface and the river is narrow. From a car you will see nothing. **July to mid-September is the peak.** The plant flowers from May but the display is a summer one, which is unusual and is why the village is busiest in August heat. **Fourteen degrees, all year.** Standing beside the river in August is noticeably cooler than standing on the road, which is the other reason people come. **Hariyo live in it.** A stickleback that survives only in constant-temperature springs, and its presence is the measure of how clean the water is. Do not put anything in the river. **August evening illumination.** The river is lit for a few weeks in August. Dates are announced annually. **It was a Nakasendo post town.** Samegai was the sixty-first station and the spring is the reason it was sited here. The old road, the well and a Meiji-era post office building are all within the same ten minutes.
