**Biwaichi cycling:** The 235km lakefront cycling route (nicknamed Biwaichi, 'around Biwa') is Japan's premier long-distance cycling course. The route is 90% dedicated bike paths with clear signage, rest stops every 10–15km, and bike-friendly accommodations. Most cyclists complete it in 2–3 days (75–120km/day), staying in lakeside hotels. Single-day rides (150–200km) are possible for experienced cyclists starting at dawn. Rent bikes in Otsu or Hikone (¥1,500–3,000/day for sport bikes). **Lake cruise value:** The 80-minute cruise from Otsu Port provides water perspective of Mt. Hiei, Otsu cityscape, and lakefront villages. The experience is scenic but slow-paced (tourist-oriented narration, dated boat interior). Better value: rent a small boat or kayak (¥3,000–5,000/2 hours) for self-guided lake exploration with more freedom and engagement. **Best lakefront areas:** Omimaiko Beach (near Omi-Maiko Station) offers widest sand beaches and swimming areas (July–August only). Shirahige Shrine's torii gate standing in the lake creates iconic photo opportunity (accessible from shore). Omihachiman's historic canal district combines lake access with traditional architecture.
