What sets Naegi Castle Ruins apart from other natural sites in Gifu is how much depends on conditions outside anyone's control.

Naegi was built on a granite outcrop above the Kiso river, and rather than clear the boulders the builders stacked their walls straight onto them and around them. The result is a castle that looks fused to the mountain: stone courses running up to a house-sized rock, stopping, and starting again on the other side of it.

The buildings were dismantled after the Meiji Restoration but the foundations survived, and a viewing deck has been rebuilt on the beams of the old keep, on the original post holes. From it you see 360 degrees — Mt. Ena, the Kiso river, the town below. It is a national historic site and one of the most photographed castle ruins in Japan among people who care about castle ruins. The climb from the car park takes about twenty minutes.

Naegi 2897-2, Nakatsugawa, above the Kiso river. By car from Nakatsugawa IC on the Chuo Expressway, then roughly a short walk up to the keep site. Use the Naegi Castle Ruins First Car Park (A1) or the car park at the Naegi Toyama Historical Museum; part of the parking became charged from April 2025. The museum charges ¥330 cash only, free for elementary and junior high school students, and gives a ¥200 parking discount voucher. Volunteer guides cost ¥500 for up to 9 people and ¥1,000 for up to 20.

Beyond the guidebook

**The walls are built onto the boulders.** Look for where a stone course runs into a natural rock and resumes past it. That is the whole reason this ruin is famous and it is easy to walk past. **The deck is on the original post holes.** The viewing platform was built on the keep's surviving foundation stones rather than beside them, which is why the view is the view the keep had. **Twenty minutes up, and it is a proper slope.** Stone steps and uneven ground. Trainers at minimum. **Get the museum's parking voucher.** ¥330 to enter, ¥200 off the car park, and the museum explains the Toyama clan and the dismantling, which the ruin itself does not. **Volunteer guides are cheap and good.** ¥500 for a small group. On a ruin with no buildings left, having someone point at the ground is worth more than usual.
