Saga has plenty of scenery; Karatsu Sea Cave Kayaking is the kind that's worth planning a whole day around.

The Matsuura coastline west of Karatsu is a 20km arc of basalt sea cliffs, small fishing harbors, and sea caves accessible only by water. The caves are cut horizontally into the cliff face — ceilings of columnar basalt 10 meters overhead, floors of deep turquoise water, the sound of the sea magnified into echoing resonance. Sea kayaking tours operate from Karatsu Marina, penetrating 8–10 of these caves over 3 hours.

What to bring

**Cave exploration:** The deepest accessible cave (Cave #4) extends 45m into the cliff and narrows to kayak-width at the far end — claustrophobic but extraordinary. The guide carries a waterproof torch; bring a camera in a dry bag. **Sunset tour (June–September):** The 16:00 tour returns to harbor at sunset over the Genkai Sea — the sea caves in late afternoon light, with orange reflecting off the water inside the basalt chambers, creates conditions impossible to photograph accurately but unforgettable in memory.
