Lake Chuzenji & Kegon Falls — Mountain Lake Sanctuary

**Kegon Falls timing:** Visit early morning (8:00–9:00am) when tour groups haven't arrived and mist catches morning light. The falls are dramatic year-round but especially powerful in May–June (snowmelt) and after summer rains (July–August). In winter, the falls partially freeze into blue ice columns, but road access is closed — only visible from distant overlooks. **Lake Chuzenji boat cruise:** The 60-minute circuit cruise (¥1,500) departs from Chuzenjiko pier and circumnavigates the lake, passing mountain views, lakeshore shrines, and the point where Kegon Falls begins. Best in autumn (late October) when the surrounding mountains are ablaze with foliage. **Chuzenji Temple:** On the lake's eastern shore, Chuzenji Temple houses a 6-meter-tall standing Kannon (Buddhist goddess of mercy) carved from a single tree. The temple is quiet, forested, and overlooks the lake — a meditative counterpoint to Toshogu's sensory overload. Entry ¥500. **Hiking:** The Senjogahara Marshland trail (see separate entry) starts 30 minutes by bus northwest of the lake. Alternatively, the Akechidaira Ropeway (10 min by bus from Kegon Falls) ascends to a plateau with 360° mountain and lake views (¥800 round-trip). **Onsen hotels:** Several lakeside hotels offer day-use onsen (¥1,000–1,500) with views over the lake — Nikko Lakeside Hotel and Chuzenji Kanaya Hotel are the best. The water is sulfur-based, milky-white, excellent after hiking. **Irohazaka Scenic Road:** The bus ascent/descent via Irohazaka is an experience itself — 48 numbered hairpin turns climbing 440m elevation through forest. Autumn foliage along the road (late October) rivals the lake itself. If driving, take the downhill 'first Irohazaka' for better views.
