Kinugawa Onsen is one of the reasons Tochigi keeps coming up whenever the conversation turns to Japan's landscapes.

Kinugawa Onsen is a hot spring resort town in a narrow mountain gorge carved by the Kinugawa River. Discovered in the Edo period, the onsen became a popular retreat for Tokyo residents after the railway connected it to the capital in the early 20th century. The town now hosts 80+ ryokan and hotels lining both sides of the river, many with outdoor rotenburo (open-air baths) overlooking the gorge and forested cliffs.

The water is alkaline simple spring (pH 7.5–8.5), colorless and odorless, known for smooth skin-softening effects (nicknamed bijin-no-yu, 'beauty water'). The onsen district combines traditional ryokan culture (kaiseki dinners, tatami rooms, yukata robes) with family-friendly attractions — theme parks, river cruises, and the nearby Tobu World Square (miniature world landmarks). The experience is less rustic than remote mountain onsen, more accessible and varied, suitable for both relaxation and exploration.

Kinugawa Onsen is 2 hours from Tokyo via Tobu Railway (Asakusa to Kinugawa-Onsen Station). Most ryokan offer free shuttle from the station. Day-use onsen available at several hotels (¥1,000–1,500). Overnight stays ¥10,000–30,000/person including dinner and breakfast. Best seasons: autumn (foliage, November) and winter (snow onsen, January–February).

What to bring

**Top ryokan for day-use onsen:** Kinugawa Grand Hotel (¥1,200 day-use, large outdoor bath with river view). Asaya Hotel (¥1,500, historic property with impressive Edo-period architecture and rooftop rotenburo). Both accept walk-ins 12:00–15:00 (avoid weekends/holidays when they may be fully booked). **River activities:** Kinugawa Line Kudari (boat descent) — a 40-minute traditional wooden boat ride through the gorge, piloted by boatmen using bamboo poles (¥3,000, April–November). The gorge walls rise 30–40 meters, autumn foliage is spectacular. Book at the pier near Kinugawa Park. **Tobu World Square:** A theme park displaying 1:25-scale replicas of world landmarks — Eiffel Tower, Taj Mahal, Great Wall of China, etc. It sounds kitschy but the craftsmanship is remarkable. Entry ¥2,800, allow 2 hours. Popular with families and photographers. **Autumn foliage:** November brings peak koyo (fall colors) — the gorge turns crimson and gold. The best view is from the train approach to Kinugawa Onsen Station — sit on the right side of the train coming from Tokyo. Also walk the riverside promenade between ryokan (free access). **Overnight ryokan experience:** For the full traditional experience, book a ryokan with in-room kaiseki dinner. Asaya Hotel (from ¥18,000/person) is historic and atmospheric. Kinugawa Onsen Hotel (from ¥12,000/person) is good mid-range value. Expect multi-course dinner (8–10 dishes), tatami room, yukata robe, and unlimited onsen access. **Combine with:** Nikko is nearby by train — stay in Kinugawa Onsen, day-trip to Toshogu Shrine and Lake Chuzenji, then return for evening onsen. Or visit Edo Wonderland (ninja theme park, a drive) for historical reenactment fun.
