Kagoshima's geography does a lot of the work at Kagoshima City Aquarium — the rest is knowing when to show up.

Kagoshima City Aquarium (いおワールドかごしま水族館) sits on the waterfront directly facing Sakurajima volcano, with the main Kuroshio Tank — a 1,500-ton tank housing whale sharks, manta rays, and tuna — visible from both inside the building and through exterior windows from the harbor promenade. The aquarium focuses on Kagoshima's marine ecosystems: the Kuroshio Current, coral reefs, deep-sea creatures, and local dolphins.

The dolphin pool is outdoor and open to the sky, with Sakurajima as backdrop during performances.

The 11:00 feeding is less crowded. The tank viewing area has bench seating; arrive 15 minutes early for front-row spots. **Jellyfish exhibit:** The 'Kurage Hiroba' (jellyfish plaza) displays 30+ jellyfish species in backlit cylindrical tanks — mesmerizing to watch. The exhibit is in a dimly lit room with seating, making it a good rest spot during aquarium circuit. The moon jellyfish tank is particularly photogenic (pink and blue LED lighting cycles). **Combo with ferry:** The aquarium is 100 meters from Sakurajima Ferry terminal. Combine with a ferry round-trip to Sakurajima (¥200, 15 min each way) — you can stay on the ferry without disembarking for a quick Sakurajima viewing cruise. Total aquarium + ferry visit: 3 hours.
