Gifu keeps its history in places like Iwamura Castle Ruins rather than in museums about it.

Iwamura stands at 717 metres, the highest domain castle in Japan, with 180 metres of vertical between the town and the keep — one of the three great mountain castles alongside Takatori in Nara and Bitchu-Matsuyama in Okayama. It is nicknamed the castle of mist, because cloud fills the valley below it and leaves the walls standing above.

Its other name is the castle of the woman lord. Otsuya, an aunt of Oda Nobunaga, took command after her husband died with their son still a child, and is said to have put on armour and fought. The walls survive, and the roppudan-heki — six stacked tiers of stonework below the main enclosure — is the set piece. Below the castle the town's merchant street runs 1.3 kilometres and is a nationally designated preservation district.

Getting there in detail

Iwamura-cho, Ena, at 717 m elevation. Reachable from Iwamura Station on the Akechi Railway, or by car with parking below the ruins; there is also a car park part-way up. The climb from the town is about 800 m with 180 m of ascent on a stone-paved slope. The site is free and open. The merchant street below runs about 1.3 km and is a national Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.

What locals know

**Walk up from the town if you can.** The 800 m stone slope from the merchant street is the historic approach and the gradient explains the castle better than the car park part-way up. **The roppudan-heki is the thing to see.** Six stacked tiers of stone wall below the main enclosure. It is the most photographed stonework in the prefecture and it is at the top, not the bottom. **Early morning in autumn for the mist.** The nickname is literal — cloud fills the valley and the walls appear above it, most reliably on cold clear mornings from late autumn. **The town is a preservation district in its own right.** 1.3 km of merchant houses, sake breweries and a castella shop. Budget as much time for the street as for the climb. **Otsuya was Nobunaga's aunt.** She held the castle as its lord and the town has built its identity on it. The local sake and shops carry the name.
