Hitome Hakkei looks different depending on the season, the weather, and the time of day — none of which a single photo can tell you.

Hitome Hakkei means eight views at a glance, and the name is literal: from one platform in the middle of Shin-Yabakei you can see eight named rock formations at once — Kaiborei, Sennin-iwa, Shoen-zan, Meoto-iwa, Gunen-zan, Eboshi-iwa, Ojika-Osao-rei and Washi-no-Su-yama. They are erosion remnants of an Aso pyroclastic flow, and the valley is thick with them.

The platform is five minutes from a large free car park, which makes this the most easily reached of the Yabakei viewpoints and the busiest in autumn. Colour peaks in the first half of November and the valley is one of the three most visited autumn destinations in Kyushu; in late spring the same rocks stand against fresh green, which locals will tell you is the better season and the reason nobody is there.

How to reach it

Getting there in detail

Yabakei-machi Shin-yabakei, Nakatsu City. By car from Nakatsu Station; roughly from Ao no Domon along the gorge road. Free and open at all hours. Free parking for about 256 cars and 11 coaches, with toilets and a tourist information office; the observation platform is about a short walk. Soba and dango stalls operate along the approach in season.

Local knowledge

**Early November is peak and it is crowded.** The car park fills by mid-morning on November weekends and the gorge road queues. Arriving before 9:00 AM or after 3:00 PM solves it. **Late April and May are the local preference.** New growth against the rock towers, and effectively no one there. **The named rocks are signposted on the platform.** Matching the eight names to the eight formations takes a couple of minutes and turns a view into something you can actually look at. **Walk the loop rather than just the platform.** A short marked circuit continues past the viewpoint through the valley floor and gives the towers from below as well as head on. **Yabakei is a whole day if you drive it.** Ao no Domon, Rakanji temple in its cliff, this viewpoint and the Yabakei Aqueduct are spread along the same road system and none of them needs more than an hour.
