Every prefecture has a site locals point to first; in Oita, Hita is usually it.

Hita prospered in the Edo period as a direct Tokugawa territory (天領, tenryo) controlling river transport along the Mikuma River. Wealth from timber and commodity trading created a merchant class whose preserved houses line the Mameda-machi district — white-walled warehouses, latticed wooden facades, and traditional inns (ryokan) converted from merchant mansions. The district is compact (400m street) and maintains Edo-period urban scale.

Hita's river location made it a transshipment point between Kyushu's interior and coastal ports — the economic geography that created the town's wealth.

Mameda-machi, Hita City. Near JR Hita Station. Free to walk; merchant house museums ¥300–500. Best preserved section: 400m along Hanamizuki-dori.

Beyond the guidebook

**Kuncho sake brewery:** Hita produces excellent sake using Mikuma River water. The flagship junmai daiginjo (¥3,500/720ml) uses local Hinohikari rice polished to 40%. Tours run 10:00, 14:00 daily; arrive 15 minutes early. **Yakatabune dinner cruise:** Summer (May–October), traditional roofed boats (yakatabune) depart at sunset for 90-minute river cruises with onboard kaiseki dinner (¥8,000/person). The boats drift downstream while staff serve courses, then motor back upstream. Book through Hita Tourism Association 1 week ahead. **Hita gion matsuri:** July 20–21, the Gion festival features enormous float processions through Mameda-machi — the floats (6–7 meters tall) are pulled through narrow Edo-period streets in tight choreography. UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage designated 2016.
