Bathhouses in Oita vary more than the word "onsen" suggests. Yufuin has its own character worth knowing before you arrive.

Yufuin is a highland hot spring resort (elevation 450m) set in a basin surrounded by mountains, most notably Mt. Yufu (1,584m) whose twin peaks dominate the southern skyline. Unlike Beppu's working-class bathing culture, Yufuin cultivated an upscale aesthetic — art galleries, European-style cafés, boutique ryokan, and a preserved rural landscape. The town's tourist development was deliberately limited to preserve the mountain views and prevent high-rise construction.

Lake Kinrin, a small lake at the town's edge, produces morning mist year-round due to underground hot springs warming the water, creating the town's most photographed scene.

Getting there in detail

Yufuin Station: by limited express from Oita City or 2.5 hrs from Hakata. Most sights within a short walk of station. Day-visit bathing at many ryokan: ¥500–1,500.

What locals know

**Lake Kinrin mist timing:** The mist appears at dawn (6:00–8:00) when temperature differential between warm spring water and cold air is greatest. October–March produces the thickest mist. The east shore provides the classic composition: mist over water with Mt. Yufu behind. Arrive 30 minutes before sunrise. Line forms at 9:30. The cake's fame comes from ingredient purity (Yufuin milk, local eggs) and perfect cream-to-cake ratio. ¥1,600 per roll. **Avoiding crowds:** Yufuin receives 4 million annual visitors. To escape: walk the rice paddy paths south of the station (a short walk reaches complete quiet with unobstructed Mt. Yufu views), or visit off-season weekdays (January–February).
