Genbikei Gorge is the kind of Iwate food stop that locals recommend before any restaurant with a sign in English.

Genbikei Gorge is a 2km rocky gorge carved by the Iwai River, featuring dramatic boulder formations, rapids, and the famous 'Kakkodango' (flying dango) — a basket delivery system where dango (rice dumplings) and tea are sent across the gorge via rope pulley from a teahouse on the cliff opposite the walking path. The system has operated for over 100 years. Visitors place money in a basket, bang a wooden board to signal the teahouse, and a few minutes later the basket returns with freshly-made dango and tea. The basket flies across the gorge suspended on a single rope, creating a charming spectacle. The gorge itself features massive boulders carved by centuries of river flow, creating potholes and smooth rock surfaces. A 300-meter walking path follows the gorge edge with observation platforms. The gorge is named 'mysterious beauty gorge' for its unique rock formations.

Insider tips

The flying dango basket is the main attraction and unique to Genbikei. The ritual: place ¥500 in the basket, bang the wooden board (called 'ban-ban'), watch the basket get pulled up to the teahouse 30 meters above the opposite cliff, wait 5 minutes, then retrieve the basket containing dango, tea, and chopsticks. Return the dishes to the basket, bang the board again, and the teahouse retrieves the basket. The dango are freshly made with sweet soy sauce glaze. The tea is hojicha (roasted green tea). Eating dango while watching the gorge is the quintessential Genbikei experience. The gorge is also beautiful to walk — the path follows the river with close-up views of the dramatic boulders and potholes carved by river erosion. Spring brings cherry blossoms along the path; autumn colors the surrounding trees; winter closes the dango service but the gorge remains accessible. Genbikei is less touristy than nearby Geibikei Gorge (30km north) but equally scenic. The two gorges are often combined in one-day trips — they're completely different experiences (Genbikei has the flying dango and walking path; Geibikei has boat rides with singing boatmen). Genbikei means 'mysterious beauty gorge' while Geibikei means 'strict beauty gorge.' Bring camera — the basket flying across the gorge makes great photos and videos. The teahouse on the cliff has operated since the Meiji period.
