Iwate's geography does a lot of the work at Michinoku Ajisai-en — the rest is knowing when to show up.

A forestry family in the hills outside Ichinoseki planted hydrangeas among their cedar plantation, and kept planting. The result is about 150,000 square metres of worked cedar forest — more than three times the area of the Tokyo Dome — with around 400 varieties and 40,000 plants growing in the shade under the trunks, and more than two kilometres of paths through it.

Growing hydrangeas under cedars rather than in open beds is what makes it different from other hydrangea gardens: the light is filtered, the colours read differently, and the scale is that of a forest rather than a park. There is a pond with cut heads floating on it. It opens only for the flowering, from late June to around the third week of July, and admission rises as the bloom advances.

Access notes

Maikawa, Ichinoseki, by car north-east of the city centre. Open only during the flowering season — in 2026 from 27 June to 20 July — daily, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM with entry to 4:00 PM. Admission for adults from high school age is ¥1,000 from 27 June to 3 July and ¥1,500 from 4 to 20 July. A cart is available for visitors who have difficulty walking, at ¥800 per person for 3–4 seats, reservations preferred. Parking is free. The site covers about 150,000 sq m with roughly 400 varieties and 40,000 plants and more than 2 km of paths.

Local knowledge

**It opens for about three weeks a year.** Late June to around the twentieth of July. Outside that there is nothing to see and the gate is shut. **Admission goes up as the bloom advances.** ¥1,000 in the first week, ¥1,500 after. Early is cheaper and less complete; the choice is genuine. **They grow under cedars.** This is a worked forestry plantation with hydrangeas in the shade beneath it, which is why the colours and the scale are unlike a hydrangea park. **Two kilometres of paths on a hillside.** It is a walk in a forest, not a stroll round beds. Proper shoes, and the cart exists for those who need it. **Rain suits it.** Hydrangeas in a wet cedar wood are better in drizzle than in sun, which is fortunate given when they flower.
