Getting the most out of Futtsu Cape Observation Tower is less about the destination than about timing the light right.

Futtsu is a sand spit that runs five kilometres out into Tokyo Bay, narrowing to almost nothing, and at the very end of it stands one of the strangest public structures in Japan: a 1971 concrete observation tower built to commemorate the centenary of the Meiji Restoration, designed as an abstracted five-needle pine, all angled ramps and slabs with no handrail logic anyone would approve today.

You climb it on open concrete stairways and come out at the top with water on three sides. Across the bay is Kanagawa — Kannonzaki is about seven kilometres away — with the Tokyo skyline to the north and, on a clear winter day, Mt. Fuji directly behind Miura. It is free, the parking is free, and it is an hour from central Tokyo. It is also, at low tide, one of the main clam-digging beaches in the region.

Getting there in detail

2280 Futtsu, Futtsu, at the end of the spit in Futtsu Park. Free and open at all times. Free parking; the park's third car park takes around 100 cars. By car, from Kisarazu-Minami IC via Route 16 and Prefectural Route 255. By public transport, take the bus for Futtsu Park from Aobori Station on the JR Uchibo Line and walk from the terminus.

**Clear winter days for Fuji.** The tower faces west across the bay and Mt. Fuji sits behind the Miura peninsula. Cold dry mornings from December to February are when it is out. **The structure is the attraction.** Reinforced concrete from 1971 shaped as a stylised pine, with open stairs and no glazing. It is a period piece that would not be built now, and it is genuinely alarming near the top in wind. **Twenty minutes from the bus terminus.** The spit is long and the bus does not reach the end. Factor in the walk both ways if you are not driving. **Low tide is clam season.** Spring brings organised clam digging on the flats either side of the spit. It is a paid activity through the local operators rather than a free-for-all. **Free, entirely.** No admission and no parking charge, which for a Tokyo Bay viewpoint an hour from the capital is unusual.
