Yokohama Chinatown

Regional food in Kanagawa says as much about the place as its temples or its scenery, and Yokohama Chinatown is where that shows.

Yokohama Chinatown (横浜中華街, Yokohama Chukagai) is Japan's largest Chinatown, home to over 600 shops and restaurants packed into a 500-meter square grid of narrow streets.

The district is anchored by ten decorative gates marking cardinal and ordinal directions, with the Zenrin-mon (善隣門, 'Good Neighbor Gate') as the main southern entrance. Inside, the streets buzz with activity — dim sum shops steaming bamboo baskets, Peking duck hanging in restaurant windows, street vendors selling tapioca milk tea and nikuman (肉まん, steamed pork buns), and souvenir shops selling everything from panda plushies to traditional Chinese medicine. The Kanteibyo Temple (関帝廟), dedicated to Guan Yu, serves as the spiritual center, with elaborate gold-and-red architecture and incense smoke billowing from giant bronze censers.

Chinatown's culinary range spans regional Chinese styles: Cantonese dim sum, Sichuan mapo tofu, Shanghai xiaolongbao, Beijing duck, and Japanese-Chinese fusion dishes like ankake yakisoba. The district serves over 20 million visitors annually, making it one of Yokohama's top attractions alongside the waterfront Minato Mirai district.

The district's roots go back to 1859, when Yokohama opened as one of Japan's first treaty ports and Chinese merchants, many acting as intermediaries between Japanese and Western traders because of shared use of Chinese characters in business documents, settled in the area in large numbers. That origin as a trading community rather than a purely residential enclave is part of why the district built up such density of commerce so early, and why it survived the widespread destruction of the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake and World War II bombing to rebuild each time as a Chinatown rather than being absorbed into the surrounding city. The ten gates marking the district's boundaries follow feng shui principles tied to the Chinese zodiac and cardinal directions, a layout choice that reflects the community's continued observance of traditional practices rather than a purely decorative gesture aimed at visitors, and the annual Chinese New Year celebrations here remain organized primarily by and for the resident Chinese-Japanese community even as they've become a major draw for outside visitors.
