Aragijima is one of the reasons Wakayama keeps coming up whenever the conversation turns to Japan's landscapes.

The Arida river makes a tight loop around a spur of land at Shimizu, and the terraces cut into that spur have the shape of the meander — a fan of paddies wrapping a curve, with the river on three sides. It is not an island, despite the name; it is a peninsula that reads as one from the viewpoint opposite.

Seventeenth-century in origin, on Japan's hundred best rice terraces list, and designated a national Important Cultural Landscape in 2013. What makes it unusual among terrace sites is that there is one correct place to stand and it is a three-minute walk from a car park, so it costs nothing and takes no effort. Flooded paddies in May and the gold of late September are the two peaks, and the site is lit for a short period in winter.

Directions

Shimizu, Aridagawa, Arida District. Car recommended — about 50 minutes and 33 km from Arida IC or Arida-Minami IC, with the viewpoint about 800 m beyond the Aragi no Sato roadside station. By public transport, by bus from JR Fujinami Station to the Mita-mae stop then a short walk. Free to visit, with a free roadside station car park and a small free viewpoint car park for about 7 vehicles, a short walk from the viewpoint.

What to bring

**There is one viewpoint and it is the right one.** The observation platform across the valley is where the meander shape resolves. Photographs from anywhere else do not work. **May and late September.** Flooded paddies reflecting the sky before planting, and gold before the harvest. Those are the two windows. **Seven parking spaces at the viewpoint.** With overflow at the roadside station 800 metres away. At sunset in the good months, take the roadside station. **It is not an island.** The name is misleading — it is a spur inside a river meander, and understanding that makes the terrace layout legible. **Winter illumination.** A short lighting period runs in the cold months; dates vary, so check with Aridagawa town.
