Takijiri-oji Shrine — Gateway to Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage

**Starting the pilgrimage:** If walking the full Nakahechi Trail (Takijiri to Hongu, 35km over 2-3 days), begin early morning (7:00-8:00 start recommended) to reach the first accommodation (Takahara or Chikatsuyu) by afternoon. The initial climb from Takijiri is the steepest section of the entire route — 300m elevation gain over 3km, mostly stone stairs. Pace yourself and take breaks. The trail is well-marked with red-and-white signs and English waypoints. Carry water (1-2 liters), snacks, rain gear, and appropriate hiking boots (muddy sections after rain). **Purification ritual:** Historically, pilgrims purified themselves by bathing in the Iwata River (富田川) flowing beside Takijiri-oji before starting the ascent. Modern pilgrims can perform a symbolic purification — wash hands and face at the river, then bow at the shrine's torii gate before entering. This ritual helps transition mentally from tourist to pilgrim, framing the hike as a spiritual journey rather than mere exercise. Take a few moments of silence at the shrine to set intentions for the walk. **Museum visit:** Allocate 20-30 minutes for the Takijiri-oji Museum before starting the hike. The exhibits (Japanese with English panels) explain the oji shrine system — 99 subsidiary shrines once lined the pilgrimage routes, serving as rest points and prayer stations. The museum displays pilgrimage artifacts (wooden prayer plaques, hiking staffs, historical photos of pilgrims) and a relief map showing the entire Kumano Kodo network. The staff provide current trail conditions and weather warnings. Restrooms and water refill are available here (last facilities until Takahara, 4 hours ahead).
