Before Urayasu became synonymous with Disney, it was a fishing village on the edge of Edo (Tokyo) Bay, and the town's bathhouse culture — rooted in the Edo period — persists in several traditional sento (public baths). Fuji, hinoki cedar tubs, and a traditional kamado (wood-fired boiler) that still heats the water.

The bathhouse experience is ritualistic: pay at the entrance (¥500), remove shoes, separate by gender into changing rooms, wash at low faucets before entering the communal tub, then soak in near-scalding water while locals discuss the day. It is social, egalitarian, and a window into pre-war Japanese daily life that has largely vanished from modern cities.

**Bathhouse etiquette:** Enter the correct gender side (noren curtains marked 男 for men, 女 for women). Undress completely in the changing room, place clothes in a basket. Bring only a small towel into the bathing area. Sit on a low stool at the washing stations, thoroughly wash body and hair before entering the tub. Do not submerge your towel in the communal water. Soak 5-10 minutes, rinse, repeat. **Cultural immersion:** Sento are primarily local institutions — tourists are rare. Expect curious glances but welcoming atmosphere. The elderly regulars often arrive at opening (15:00) and stay for hours. Evening (18:00–20:00) brings working families. The conversations overheard (in Japanese) cover neighborhood gossip, politics, and daily life — an anthropological experience. **Surviving sento:** Ohana-no-Yu is the most traditional, but Hinode-yu (日の出湯) in nearby Ichikawa City also maintains Edo-style architecture. Both are threatened by declining patronage and aging facilities — each visit supports preservation of this cultural practice. **After bathing:** The changing room usually has a small refrigerator selling glass-bottle milk (coffee or fruit flavor) and ramune soda — the traditional post-bath drink. Drinking cold milk while body temperature slowly drops is part of the ritual.
