Udo Jingu Shrine — Cliffside Cave Sanctuary

**Tide timing:** Visit at mid- to high-tide when waves crash against the shrine's base rocks, creating dramatic spray and sound. The intensity of the ocean presence changes completely with tide level. Low tide exposes more rock and reduces the drama. Check tide tables before visiting. **Undama throwing ritual:** Purchase 5 clay balls (¥100) near the shrine entrance. Men throw with left hand, women with right hand, aiming for the rope circle on a rock below. The throw requires surprising accuracy — success rate is ~20%. The balls are made from local clay and blessed, so even failed throws are considered offerings to the sea kami. **Photography:** The best shot is from the cave entrance looking out — the vermillion shrine hall framed by natural rock arch with ocean beyond. Midday sun illuminates the shrine interior; morning/afternoon light is too dim inside the cave. Bring wide-angle lens (16–24mm) to capture the full scene.
