Takachiho Gorge is one of the reasons Miyazaki keeps coming up whenever the conversation turns to Japan's landscapes.

Takachiho Gorge is one of Japan's most dramatic natural landscapes, carved by the Gokase River through ancient volcanic basalt columns. The gorge stretches approximately 7 km and features stunning vertical cliffs rising 80–100 meters on both sides. The centerpiece is Manai Falls, a 17-meter waterfall cascading directly into the emerald-green river below.

Rowboats can be rented to experience the gorge from water level — a truly unforgettable perspective. Early morning visits reward photographers with mist rising from the river.

Rowboats available 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM (March–November, weather permitting). Gorge paths open daylight hours.

Closed: Gorge paths open year-round. Rowboat rentals closed December–February and during adverse weather.

Late October–November for autumn foliage; early morning year-round for mist over the river; spring for fresh greenery

Directions

By Bus from Nobeoka: Take the Takachiho Express Bus from Nobeoka Station (approx. 1 hr 40 min). By Car: From Miyazaki City approx. 2 hrs via Route 218. Parking available near the gorge entrance (¥500).

Local knowledge

Arrive before 8am to beat crowds and catch morning mist. Rowboats sold from 8:30am (¥800/30 min). Staying overnight lets you attend the Yokagura performance (10pm–5am, ¥700) at Takachiho Shrine.
