Sun Messe Nichinan looks different depending on the season, the weather, and the time of day — none of which a single photo can tell you.

Sun Messe Nichinan is a hillside park featuring seven full-scale Moai statues — officially licensed replicas of Easter Island's famous heads, standing 5.5 meters tall and facing the Pacific Ocean. The statues were a gift from Chile in gratitude for Japan's aid in restoring the original Moai. Each statue represents a different fortune (work, health, love, marriage, money, achievement, family).

The surreal sight of Moai on a Japanese hillside makes this one of Miyazaki's most unusual photo opportunities.

**Best time for photos:** Late afternoon (15:00–17:00) provides side-lighting that creates shadows on the Moai faces, adding depth and drama. The Pacific Ocean background and coastal cliffs complete the composition. Overcast days create flat lighting that makes the statues look less impressive. **Touch for luck:** Visitors are encouraged to touch each Moai while making wishes related to that statue's fortune domain. The statues' surface is smooth concrete — touching is actively encouraged, unlike most heritage sites. **Combine with Udo Jingu:** These two sites are 10 minutes apart on the same coastal road. Ideal half-day: Udo Jingu → Sun Messe → continue north along Nichinan coast (scenic drive). The coastal drive from Udo Jingu to Miyazaki City via Route 220 takes 60 minutes and offers continuous ocean views.
