Tenjinbashisuji Shopping Street has outlasted the version of Osaka it was originally built for, and it shows.

Tenjinbashisuji Shopping Street (天神橋筋商店街) holds the Guinness World Record as Japan's longest shopping arcade at 2.6 kilometers, divided into six sections (1-chome through 6-chome) with 600+ shops. Unlike tourist-oriented Shinsaibashi, Tenjinbashisuji serves local residents with grocery stores, traditional crafts, clothing, restaurants, and daily necessities — prices are 20–30% lower than tourist districts.

The street dates to the Edo period when it developed around Osaka Tenmangu Shrine (serving shrine visitors). Today it maintains working-class authenticity — elderly shopkeepers, local dialect conversations, and merchandise aimed at Osaka residents rather than visitors. Walking the full 2.6km provides immersive experience of everyday Osaka life.

Tenjinbashi 1-6 chome, Kita Ward. Access via Tenjinbashisuji Rokuchome (6-chome, north end), Ogimachi, or Minami-Morimachi (south end near shrine) stations. Free to walk, shops typically 10:00–20:00. Visit duration: 60–90 minutes for full walk, 2–3 hours with shopping stops. Combine with Osaka Tenmangu Shrine at south end.

**Section guide:** Each chome (section) has distinct character: 1-chome (near shrine) has traditional crafts, kimono accessories, and ceremonial goods; 2–3 chome transition to daily goods (groceries, housewares); 4–5 chome feature restaurants and cafes; 6-chome (north end) has electronics, books, and young-oriented shops. Most tourists start at 6-chome station and walk south toward shrine (gradual descent, easier than reverse). **Local dining:** The arcade's restaurants serve working-class Osaka food at non-tourist prices: udon shops (¥500–700), tonkatsu (¥800–1,200), teishoku set meals (¥700–1,000). Try Tenma Udon (天満うどん, handmade noodles ¥600) in 4-chome or Tenjin Tonkatsu (天神とんかつ, crispy pork cutlets ¥900) in 3-chome. The no-English-menu experience adds authenticity; point-and-order works fine. **Osaka Tenmangu Shrine:** The arcade's southern terminus is Osaka Tenmangu (大阪天満宮), dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane (scholarship deity). The shrine is exam-season pilgrimage site for students seeking academic success. The shrine grounds include beautiful gardens, bronze ox statues (rub the ox's head for wisdom), and fortune-telling (おみくじ omikuji ¥200). The Tenjin Matsuri (July 24–25) is one of Japan's three great festivals with 3,000+ participants, boats on Okawa River, and fireworks — if visiting late July, time visit to coincide.
