Shinsekai & Tsutenkaku Tower — Retro Working-Class District
Shinsekai (新世界, 'New World') is Osaka's retro entertainment district built in 1912, designed to evoke Paris (northern section) and New York (southern section). The district's centerpiece, Tsutenkaku Tower (通天閣, 103m), is Osaka's symbol — a garish red-and-yellow tower modeled on the Eiffel Tower. The district feels frozen in Showa-era (1950s–70s) working-class Japan — pachinko parlors, cheap kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers) joints, and dive bars.
Shinsekai's deliberately kitschy aesthetic attracts tourists seeking 'old Osaka' — the neon signage, retro architecture, and unpretentious restaurants contrast sharply with modern Umeda/Namba. The district is safe despite its gritty appearance; actual danger is minimal but the aesthetic plays up rough-around-the-edges charm.
