Not every sacred site in Okinawa draws a crowd. Sefa-utaki is one of the ones that doesn't need to.

Sefa-utaki was the most important sacred site in the Ryukyu kingdom. The kingdom's religion was administered by women — the kikoe-okimi, the highest priestess, was appointed by the king and installed here — and until the nineteenth century men were not permitted to enter, including the king, who had to change into women's clothing at the boundary.

What is there is not built. It is a set of prayer places among limestone outcrops in coastal forest: rock faces, a natural triangular cleft called Sangui formed where two enormous slabs lean together, and a point from which Kudaka island, the island the creation deity is said to have made first, is visible across the water. It is still in active use. The site closes entirely for six days a year on the lunar calendar so that it can rest, and photography and behaviour are governed accordingly.

539 Kudeken, Chinen, Nanjo. Car recommended, or by bus from Naha. Admission ¥300 for adults and ¥200 for groups of 20 or more. Closed entirely for six days a year — the first three days of the fifth lunar month and of the tenth lunar month — when nobody may enter. Access to Sangui may be restricted during conservation work.

Beyond the guidebook

**Check the lunar rest days.** The site shuts completely for three days in the fifth lunar month and three in the tenth. Those dates move every year and there is no way in during them. **Sangui may be viewed from the path only.** Conservation work has at times restricted approach to the triangular cleft, allowing viewing from the walkway but not head-on. Confirm current access. **It is in use.** People come here to pray, not to sightsee. Follow the signage on where not to stand and do not touch the rock faces. **Look for Kudaka.** The island is visible from one of the prayer points and the sightline is the reason the site is where it is. **Tickets are sold at the Green Hall, not at the gate.** The reception building is a short walk from the entrance and last sales are 45 minutes before closing.
